Royal Oak Calgary NeighbourhoodRoyal Oak and Royal Oak Estates are both communities in NW Calgary, situated North of Crowchild Trail North just past Stoney Trail and South of Country Hills Blvd.

Royal Oak offers a great mix of homes from apartment condos, townhouses, single-family homes, to gorgeous estate homes in planned communities with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, city and river valley.  Royal Oak is also Calgary’s highest community in elevation.

Building in Royal Oak started in the mid-’90s, and today offers a well planned maturing community. Most of the homes in the area were built by Cedarglen, Jayman and Avi Homes.

Royal Oak single-family detached homes start at approximately $330,000 for a porch style home, and range up to $2,000,000 on the ridge for an estate home, while prices for a Royal Oak condos or townhouse start at just under $300,000.

Nearly 12,000 people live in Royal Oak today and residents enjoy quick access to amenities, including the Royal Oak Shopping Centre and future Royal Oak Business development. The community also has LRT services with a “Park-n-Ride” slated for completion in the near future.  With the completion of Stoney Trail, Royal Oak is fast becoming a desirable community for its quiet streets and excellent access to the mountains, downtown, as well as various other amenities.

Schools

Royal Oak SchoolFamilies in Royal Oak are able to enjoy two amazing schools that serve children from kindergarten to grade 9. The Royal Oak School opened in September of 2010, with a capacity of 550 students and grades from kindergarten to grade 3. There’s also a large green space near the school site that offers a playground toboggan hill, basketball courts and vast open spaces where you can often see families playing or flying kites.  The second school in Royal Oak is a grade William D. Pratt School which serves grades 4 through 9.  Both schools currently have excellent principles and teachers that work hard to help children succeed.

Royal Oak Community Association

The Royal Oak Rocky Ridge Community Association is the community association for the neighbourhood and is run very well with many active members. As well as dance workshops, the Royal Oak Rocky Ridge Community Association offers athletic programmes, neighbourhood barbeques and much more. Yearly casino fundraising events are also conducted by the organization.

Royal Oak Shopping, Restaurants and Professional Services

As you enter the communities of Royal Oak, Rocky Ridge, and Bearspaw, the Royal Oak shopping Plaza is located at the North end of the city.  With Walmart, Sobeys, London Drugs, numerous amazing restaurantsretail stores and services, the area is well known.  Royal Vista industrial park surrounds the shopping plaza and is 136 acres of various businesses, an educational facility, including the prestigious Renert Learning Academy, which is undergoing a second major expansion. The trade area is also one of the fastest-growing in Calgary. Additional shopping is just a few minutes away from both the newly built Beacon Hill shopping district-with icons such as Costco, Home Depot and Canadian Tire, and the Crowfoot shopping centre with Co-Op, Safeway, Lowes, Cineplex theatres and numerous restaurants.  There is also business in the neighbouring community of Rocky Ridge with the main one being an amazing Rocky Ridge Co-Op with a full grocery store, fuel and much more. 

Royal Oak Recreation Facilities

Royal Oak homeowners are in close proximity to Rocky Ridge‘s famous Shane Homes YMCA. With its stunning wave design, this YMCA is located just north of Royal Oak and offers a multitude of opportunities for leisure and entertainment through water, sports and fitness facilities and multi-purpose areas.  With approved childcare and a Calgary Public Library, there is also a strong emphasis on arts and learning. 

Transit in Royal Oak

The Crowfoot CTrain is also located here and will be eventually extended to the south end of the neighbourhood to another station. City busses also frequent the neighbourhood taking residents to the CTrain station.  The newly constructed Stoney Trail ring road borders Royal Oak’s east side, enabling the Trans Canada Highway, Queen Elizabeth Highway (QE2) and Deerfoot Trail to be easily accessed and soon to be SW Calgary with the West completion of Stoney Trail. 

Royal Oak Crime Rates/Statistics

The majority of crimes in Royal Oak are focused on vandalism and vehicle-related robberies, making Royal Oak a reasonably secure neighbourhood.  It is always advisable to invest in a good security system complete with monitoring as well as regularly locking doors and windows both on homes and vehicles.  Visit the City of Calgary Crime Map for a more comprehensive overview.
